Feeling halfway inspired by Rob Reiner’s cinematic adaptation of Stephen King’s Misery, Repentance is a serviceable psychological thriller that offers enough twist to keep things from turning formulaic. Anthony Mackie (Notorious, She Hate Me) stars as therapist/spiritual advisor Tommy Carter, a man who’s recently turned his brush with death into a best selling book “Don’t Look Back.” Essentially living life of a rock star writer, he earns a fan through Forest Whitaker’s (The Last King of Scotland, The Butler) portrayal of Angel Sanchez. When introduced to Angel, he’s dealing with the mysterious death of his mother and even finds inspiration through Tommy’s book.
