Soultrain.com Profile: Derek Minor

“I don’t consider myself a Christian rapper; I consider myself a Christian that raps about what he knows.”

Christian rap has been around just as long as its secular progenitor. Trickles of the hip-hop sub-genre made headway on mainstream music video outlets thanks to Kirk Franklin or even Kanye West, considering the College Dropout single “Jesus Walks” earned several Stellar Awards before voting ballets were withdrawn. Fast forward to today, the rise of independent artists has only benefited the movement. One of the leaders of this surge in popular for Christian hip-hop is none other than Atlanta-based Reach Records. Co-founder/owner, MC and Grammy Award winner Lecrae is the label’s flagship artist, but other signed acts, including Trip Lee and Andy Mineo, have generously added their own stamp to the game. Making an impact before and after his signage to Reach is Michigan born, Tennessee raised Derek Jackson, a.k.a. Derek Minor.
