SoulTrain.com Profile: The Doublemints

Three years ago, Issa Rae released episode one of her groundbreaking and award winning web series The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl. Entitled “The Stop Sign,” the premiere began with Rae’s character, J, rhyming hilariously to a song dubbed “Booty Shawts.” Featuring a beat that wouldn’t feel too out of place at an Atlanta strip club, the lyrics were quite raunchy.  Of course, this would serve as an humorous dichotomy to J’s more conservative demeanor around other characters. This is something that could be defined in one term: “Sophistiratchet.” The track was created by Rae, who along with Daisy O, DevyDev and Jai Lorenzo form the Los Angeles-based collective The Doublemints.
